A Moment with Maggie & Suzi Boutique

We got to speak with Maggie & Suzi’s Boutique about their store, their mission, their thoughts on fast fashion and sustainable style, wardrobe staples and more. Read on to see what we found…

Tell us about Maggie & Suzi in your own words?

Maggie & Suzi is a unique Store which sells and promotes Authentic Scottish Independent  Designer clothes and Accessories on our ground floor and preloved Designer Clothes and accessories on our lower floor.  We offer one to one styling experiences, first class customer service and want all women to feel great when they enter and leave our store.

How did Maggie & Suzi come about? What’s your mission?

Maggie already had a boutique which housed niche designers and pre-loved clothing – Suzi had an online preloved business which she worked on part time.  On taking early retirement from her corporate life with Sky TV Suzi saw a huge gap in the market and approached Maggie to go into partnership on the preloved side  of her business – 2 weeks later we signed the lease on our current premises, in the first year we won Most Enterprising Business in the Highlands from Highland Business Women’s Club which was a massive accolade as we were up against many established businesses.  In year 2 we opened the Scottish Designer Floor.  We have now been in business for nearly 4 years and have paid out £300,000 to our clients who give us their clothes to sell and Scottish Designers.
Our Mission is to show all women that style is sustainable and affordable whether it be an Elizabeth Martin Cora Coat which will last forever or a pre-loved piece which you will generally pay a 3rd of original price for and love again!

What’s Maggie & Suzi’s thoughts on sustainable fashion?

We don’t really like to use the word fashion as the name itself now denotes throw away.  However sustainable style is at the forefront of our business.  Our Scottish Designers are all providing the most beautiful pieces that will outlast anything that you would buy on the High Street – always think about pounds per wear when purchasing any item of clothes.  We have a Harris Tweed Suit in our family that has been passed down to every generation from my Great Grandmother – my daughter now wears it and it is still in beautiful condition – this is the quality that we want to sell.
On our preloved floor we have now had some pieces of clothing in to sell 3 times over and that will  go on – the sustainability of preloved clothing is fabulous and it gives women the chance to purchase clothing that is now affordable and that they may not have had the chance to wear prior to Maggie & Suzi.

What piece from your wardrobe can you not live without?

Oh my goodness that is a question that I cannot answer as there are too many – however here’s a few – I love my new Fiona coat Navy/Black fro Elizabeth Martin – cannot wait to wear it with dark blue boot cut jeans – I have 6 Terry Macey Eddie Coats – every colour you can imagine – I will never part with them, Morag MacPherson Kimono and many many more – clothes are my passion

Which piece of Elizabeth Martin clothing is your favourite?

The Cora Coat – I have it in Harris Tweed check and Seagreen and it is so stylish, elegant. warm and functional. Our customers absolutely love it – if anyone tries it on they have to buy it.

What’s in the pipeline for Maggie & Suzi – what does 2019 have for you?

We have 2 big projects that are at the testing stage which we will role out to the public in the very near future – they will benefit our Designers and pre-loved Clients and we will be very excited to tell you about them very soon.  We are also looking forward to the tourist Season we are already sending clothes to Australia and America for customers who have no room in  their case for their purchases.  Even although retail is going through a challenging time  – we envisage growth this year which will benefit us all.  Independents are coming to the fore – we can feel it.
